Cross Country Ski Report – Saturday, January 11th, 2014

What a difference a day makes! The rain started Friday at dusk and has continued most of the night. We received enough rain to saturate the snow. The forecast calls for the rain to transition to snow this afternoon.

Grooming the wet snow is not practical because the weight of the groomer turns the snow to slush. So we will not be grooming today. Likewise on some of the lower parts of the trails just the pressure of skis will reduce the snow to slush. So we may have to close some of the lower trails. The good news is that we have a good snow pack and with the cooler temps coming in tonight we plan on grooming tomorrow.

3 to 7 trails will be open this morning for a total of 9 to 16 kilometers of classic skiing. We hope to open more trails as the temps cool throughout the day. The Blizzard trail is the only trail open for skate skiing. All trails have saturated snow conditions. Depth of packed snow ranges from 5 to 10 inches (17 inches in the Blizzard XC Ski Park where we make snow). Depth of unpacked snow ranges from 7 to 14 inches.

Today, Light rain this morning transitioning to snow showers this afternoon. Temps steady in the mid 30’s.  Wind WSW 10 to 20 mph. Chance of precip 60%

Tonight, Cloudy with scattered snow showers. Low 22F. winds W at 10 to 15 mph.
